Ever since the incredible discovery of Richard III in 2012 it seems a modern Civil War has broken out between two opposing factions who support the king's reburial in York or Leicester respectively. This 'war' has been played out over social media and the internet and has gotten increasingly personal and vitrolic over previous months. The Richard III Society has attempted to remain out of it whilst the matter goes through the judicial process but that has only seemed to increase the controversy.
This week the website administrator of the Leicester loves Richard site has received personal emails from a member of the pro-York lobby attacking his 9 year old son. Feelings are obviously high, evident from the tit for tat messages of hate posted on the relevant facebook pages.
So what is your opinion?
Personally, I feel York is the place for the reburial, not just because I will be moving there shortly. Its evident from his life that Richard III held an affection for the north, closely connected with Middleham, Sheriff Hutton and York itself although this northernness has clearly been hammed up. Having visited Leicester Cathedral, my argument is based solely on asthetics. the modern Leicester Cathedral is not match for the medieval magnifience that is York Minster. Bolstered by the existing Richard III museum in Monk Bar and proximity to Middleham Castle makes it a suitable option to me. That being said, with Anne Neville in Westminster Abbey, as the king Richard probably would have chosen his capital. His desire to be buried in York is by no means an established fact.
What are your thoughts on the entire episode?

I think that targeting a 9 year old child is despicable behaviour, truly worthy of Richard III himself.

Oh dear... The planned reburial of King Richard III at Leicester Cathedral looks set to be delayed after officials deferred a decision over plans for his tomb. The remains of the king, who died in battle in 1485, were discovered by archaeologists under a council car park in the city in September 2012. He was due to be reburied at the cathedral next summer. But the body which rules on changes to Church of England buildings has asked for more information on the plans. The Very Rev David Monteith, Dean of Leicester, said: "Leicester Cathedral recognises the complexity of the case the Cathedral Fabric Commission for England is having to deal with. "We are disappointed but we appreciate that it is rare for a major application of this kind to be approved at the first discussion owing to its complex nature." The project would cost up to £1.3m, of which £96,000 would be spent on the tomb and vault. The outcome of a legal battle over where the last Plantagenet king will be buried also remains unresolved. Distant relatives of Richard III, the Plantagenet Alliance, favour reburial in York and have won a judicial review challenging a decision for the king's bones to be reinterred in Leicester. Dean Monteith said any final decisions must await the outcome of the review. "We fully respect that legal process," he said. He added the cathedral's chapter, which is the body responsible for its administration, will discuss its response to the commission's decision later this week. Richard, who reigned from 1483, was killed in the final battle of the Wars of the Roses at Bosworth field in Leicestershire in 1485. The discovery of his remains amid the buried ruins of an old friary beneath a car park last year sparked worldwide interest. The king was found following a lengthy campaign by members of the Richard III Society. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-24906332

All settled now and in my view, the right decision was made. I have been very disturbed at the extent of the vitriol pouring out from the pro-York camp on anything and everyone to do with Leicester. Some of it is verging on the libelous.

I think that targeting a 9 year old child is despicable behaviour, truly worthy of Richard III himself. While I agree that targeting a child is despicable behavior, let us not lump Richard with the despicable behavior of others. He probably wasn't a saint, but in my opinion neither were Thomas More or Edward the Confessor. Richard III was the victim of bad press. By the way, I think Margaret Beaufort had a hand in the princes' murder.

With regards to the post by Edward tudor gentry in respect of the threat to a nine year old lad, that is was worthy of Richard 111, that is exactly the type of remark that can be expected from a henry tudor supporter a typical pre-conceived blinked view worthy of david starkey. Bearing in mind that tudors army was mainly made up of French mercenaries paid for by a French king. why did tudor see fit to change the date of his so called victory, in which he paid little part, to the day before the actual battle, obviously so that he would be able to claim that those who fought for Richard were traitors and he could have them executed. Bearing in mind the scheming of his mother Margaret beaufort, who probably had a hand in the murder of one,if not both of the princes, proves the old adage that the fruit never fall far from the tree rotten or no.
